Sentinel Butte, North Dakota, in 1915 sat in the western part of the state, where a homestead boom had brought a rush of new settlers over the previous decade and a half. The flat-topped butte that gave the town its name had long served as a landmark for travelers crossing the open prairie, and the surrounding land was a mix of wheat fields, cattle range, and the rough breaks along the Little Missouri River. Grain prices were climbing that year as the war in Europe drew on American farm exports, so many families here were betting on a good harvest to prove up their claims. Life revolved around the general store, the church and school, the grain elevator, and the rail connections that carried wheat and livestock to larger markets farther east.
