Fargo, North Dakota, in 1921 was a Red River city of roughly 20,000 people that had grown up around the Northern Pacific Railway, whose shops and freight yards gave the town much of its working life. Farming dominated the surrounding Red River Valley, and wheat, sugar beets and grain moved through local elevators and rail sidings to markets far to the east. The city had been named for William Fargo, a Northern Pacific director, and it served as the commercial center for eastern North Dakota and the Minnesota border towns across the river. Postwar prices for farm goods had begun to fall by 1921, and many families in the region felt the squeeze of debt and lower incomes that year. The panorama captures the town as residents knew it, a rail and farm center still tied closely to the seasons and the trains.
