Maddock, a small railroad town in Benson County in north-central North Dakota, stood in 1913 within a region that had been transformed by wheat farming. Homesteaders had settled the surrounding prairie in the decades after statehood, and the grain they raised moved out by rail, so grain elevators, lumberyards and general stores clustered along the tracks. Farmers, merchants and railroad workers made up most of the population, and the rhythm of the year followed planting and harvest. Social life centered on church suppers, school programs and Saturday trading, when news about grain prices and the weather passed quickly from one storefront to the next. For the people who lived there, Maddock was first and foremost a place where the prairie's crops met the railroad.
