Maddock, a small town in Benson County in north-central North Dakota, was a wheat-and-livestock community in 1913, during the years when homesteaders were still pushing onto the prairie. Grain moved out by rail, and the farm trade, grain elevators, and general stores were the town's economic base. Its residents lived with the region's hard winters, dry summers, and the constant question of whether the next harvest would pay off. Benson County was still a young county, and local life centered on churches, schools, lodges, and the courthouse business that came with new land claims and town growth. For people in Maddock in 1913, the town was a place where the railroad, the elevator, and the surrounding farms were tied tightly together.
