Chamberlain, on the Missouri River, grew up in the 1880s as a division town of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway, which made it a shipping point for grain, livestock, and supplies moving into the surrounding ranch and farm country. By 1907 the town was a trade center for both settlers and nearby Native communities, and the river crossing remained a key link between east and west. The Indian School here was one of the federal boarding schools of that era, where children from reservations across the region were enrolled with the aim of replacing their languages and customs with English and American trades. Life for the students centered on daily routines of classes, farm and industrial labor, and military-style discipline, while families who lived far away often saw their children only during summer breaks. The photograph records a moment when such schools were central to federal Indian policy and to the town's identity.
