Chamberlain, a Missouri River town in Brule County, South Dakota, was still young in 1907, having been platted in 1880 when the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway reached the river and named the stop for railroad director Selah Chamberlain. The railroad made the town, and by the time this view was taken, its rail yards, depot, and river crossing were the main reasons merchants, grain buyers, and stockmen came to its streets. Main Street and the avenues running off it served a surrounding countryside of wheat, corn, and cattle ranching, and the town's stores and hotels depended on farm families who arrived by wagon on market days. Residents of the period would have known Chamberlain first as a railroad crossing and a county seat, a place where the new century's commerce and the settlement of the James River and Missouri country met.
