Mitchell, South Dakota, in 1907 was a railroad and farm trade town in Davison County, founded on the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul line that reached the area in the late 1870s and named for the railway's president, Alexander Mitchell. Its downtown streets, including the busy corner of Main Street and Third Avenue shown here, served as the place where farmers sold grain and livestock and bought supplies for the season. Residents took pride in the Corn Palace, a civic showpiece decorated with cut corn and grain that drew visitors and promoted the region's crops. Dakota Wesleyan University, a Methodist school opened in Mitchell in 1885, added a college population and a steady cultural presence to the town's commercial life.
