Sioux Falls, the largest city in South Dakota, sat at the falls of the Big Sioux River in 1907, and its downtown was built around Phillips Avenue and Ninth Street, the commercial core shown in this 1907 panorama. The city's economy rested on its position as a rail and trade center for the surrounding farm country, with lines radiating out to carry grain, livestock, and goods. Its meatpacking plant and its granite quarries, which supplied stone for buildings across the region, gave local workers steady jobs. Residents of the period knew the town as the regional seat of commerce and county government, where Minnehaha County's courthouse and the stores lining the avenues drew farmers and merchants from across the eastern part of the state. The street scene recorded here reflects a community still growing into the role it would hold for the next century.
