Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1907 was a growing city of roughly 10,000 people, built around the falls of the Big Sioux River and the granite quarries that supplied stone for buildings across the Midwest. The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul and other rail lines ran through town, making it a shipping and trade center for the wheat, corn and livestock of the surrounding prairie. Packing plants, flour and milling operations, and wholesale houses gave the local economy its backbone, while the city's churches, schools and Civil War-era veterans' groups shaped civic life. Residents of the period knew Sioux Falls as the largest city in eastern South Dakota and the commercial heart of the state's southeast corner.
