Chamberlain, South Dakota, in 1907 was a young railroad town on the east bank of the Missouri River, named for Selah Chamberlain, a director of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway. The railroad made it a division point, and its crews, depot, and freight yards gave the town much of its daily life. Farmers and ranchers from the surrounding prairie shipped grain, livestock, and supplies through the town, and the river crossing tied it to the country on the far shore. Brule County's seat of government, along with its churches, schools, and stores, drew residents from the farms and small towns nearby. Those who lived there in 1907 would have known Chamberlain first as a railroad and river town, still growing as the Dakota frontier settled.
