Chamberlain, South Dakota, sat on the east bank of the Missouri River in 1907, a railroad and trading town that had grown up after the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway reached the river. The town served as a supply point for surrounding farms and ranches and for the Lower Brule and Crow Creek reservations across the river, where Dakota families lived under federal agents. This photograph shows the Indian School, a federal boarding school run by the Office of Indian Affairs, where Native children were enrolled, housed away from their families, and taught English, farm work, and trades. Such schools were central to federal policy at the time, and many students' lives were shaped by them. Local residents knew the campus as a fixture of the town's economy and its daily life.
