In 1915 Flandreau sat in Moody County, eastern South Dakota, a state for only about twenty-six years after its 1889 admission to the Union. The Flandreau Santee Dakota community had been established in the area after the 1862 Dakota War in Minnesota, when many Dakota families were removed from their homelands and resettled here. That year the United States was still at peace while war raged in Europe, and local readers followed the news from abroad alongside county affairs and crop prices. The federal school grounds shown in the picture reflected a relationship between the government and the Dakota people that often pulled their interests in different directions.
