Madison, South Dakota, in 1913 was a small county seat on the eastern prairie, and its State Normal School, founded in 1881 when the region was still Dakota Territory, was the town's most important institution. The school trained teachers for the one-room country schools scattered across the surrounding farmland, so its graduates carried its name into communities across the state. Local economy rested on grain and livestock, with farm families hauling wheat and corn to the railroad depots that linked Madison to larger markets. Students and townspeople knew the campus as the place where rural South Dakota learned to read, write, and teach, and this view shows a settlement built around that work.
