Yankton College, the Congregational school perched on the bluffs above the Missouri River in Yankton, South Dakota, was a small liberal arts institution in 1912, founded in the 1880s when the town was among the territory's leading settlements. Yankton had been the capital of Dakota Territory before statehood in 1889, and by the early twentieth century its economy rested on farming, grain and livestock trade, and the river traffic and railroad lines that carried them out. The college drew students from across the region, many of them children of Scandinavian, German, and Anglo-American homesteaders who sent them to study for teaching, ministry, and business. A panorama of the campus from that year captures a place where local ambition and church-backed education were closely tied to the prairie economy around it.
