Hot Springs, the county seat of Fall River County in the southern Black Hills, took its name from warm mineral water that rises from the ground, and by 1912 that water had made the town a health resort. The National Sanitarium, founded by a veterans' association, offered baths and rest cures to former soldiers and others with chronic ailments. Local quarries supplied the pale sandstone used in many of the town's buildings, which gave the place a distinctive look. Railroad service carried visitors in from the Midwest and beyond, and townspeople depended on those seasonal guests for much of their livelihood.
