Iroquois, a small farming town in Kingsbury County in eastern South Dakota, was photographed in 1912, about two decades after the area was opened to homesteaders and roughly twenty-three years after South Dakota became a state in 1889. Its economy rested on grain, especially wheat, oats, and corn, along with livestock, and the grain elevator, the lumberyard, and the rail connection were the town's commercial lifelines. Like many prairie towns of the period, Iroquois was built around its main street, where churches, a few stores, and the local school served families who had come west to farm. Residents in 1912 would have known the town as a place of hard work and modest growth, shaped by the weather that could make or break a season.
