De Smet, in Kingsbury County, South Dakota, was a young railroad town in 1912, roughly three decades after the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul line reached the area and settlers began claiming homesteads on the surrounding prairie. Wheat, oats, and other small grains were the basis of its economy, and the grain elevators and loading platforms along the tracks gave the town its purpose: farm produce went out by rail and merchandise came in. The town took its name from Father Pierre-Jean De Smet, the Jesuit missionary who had traveled widely among the tribes of the northern plains. Many residents had arrived during the land rush of the 1880s, and by 1912 they were living with the memory of the hard years that followed the boom, when drought and falling prices tested families who had staked everything on sod and a claim. Those who had come through that period knew the town as a place that had survived its own early overreach.
