Rapid City, South Dakota, in 1912 was a young railroad and ranching town on the eastern edge of the Black Hills, having grown up after the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway reached it in 1886. The town served as a supply center for cattle and timber operations in the surrounding hills and for the gold mining camps farther west, and its streets at the intersection of Sixth and Main were lined with commercial blocks, hotels and wooden storefronts. Local life revolved around the stockyards, lumber yards and the courthouse, and residents knew the community as the gateway to the Black Hills and to Mount Rushmore's region, though the monument itself was not begun until 1927. A panoramic view from this corner captures a town still expanding, with the business district giving way quickly to open prairie.
