De Smet, in Kingsbury County, South Dakota, grew up in 1879 when the railroad reached the eastern prairie, and by 1912 it was a farm trading town whose economy rested on wheat, oats, and cattle shipped out by rail. Grain elevators and lumberyards along the tracks gave the town its commercial character, and the courthouse and business blocks reflected its standing as the county seat. The town took its name from Pierre-Jean De Smet, the Jesuit missionary who had traveled the upper Missouri country. Residents of 1912 knew De Smet mainly as a place of church congregations, schools, and seasonal markets, and they still remembered the hard winter of 1880 to 1881, when settlers struggled through deep snow and short supplies.
