Huron, South Dakota, was a railroad and farm-trade town on the James River in 1912, and its state fair was among the year's main gatherings for the surrounding prairie counties. Wheat, corn, and livestock raised on the homesteads of the James River valley were the region's money crops, and fair exhibits, stock judging, and horse racing gave farm families a chance to compare their harvests and breeding stock. The Chicago and North Western line through town carried grain and livestock east and brought settlers, supplies, and fairgoers in by train. For many residents, the fair marked the close of the summer season and the start of the fall market, when a good crop meant a busy town.
