Huron, the seat of Beadle County in east-central South Dakota, was a railroad town in 1910, shaped by the Chicago and North Western line that had brought settlers to the James River valley after the territory's farmland opened to homesteading. Wheat, corn, oats, and livestock from the surrounding farms moved through its depots, and the town served as a trading center for families who had come west in the boom years of the 1880s and 1900s. The South Dakota State Fair had been held in Huron since 1880, so the fairgrounds were the place where farmers, merchants, and visiting exhibitors gathered each late summer to compare crops, stock, and machinery. This panoramic view records that fairground as a point of pride for a young state that had joined the Union in 1889.
