Lead, in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, existed because of gold. Prospectors had pushed into the hills after the 1870s strikes, and by 1909 the Homestake Mine above the town was the dominant employer, with its shafts, rail spurs, and stamp mills running around the clock. Miners' families, shopkeepers, and mining company managers made up a town built on steep, narrow streets against the hillside, and the mine's payroll shaped its schools, churches, and saloons. Residents of 1909 would have known Lead first as the home of the Homestake, a company whose fortunes rose and fell with the price of gold and the health of the underground workings. The panorama shows that dependence plainly, with the mine buildings and town crowded together in the gulch.
