Fort Meade sat in the northern Black Hills near the town of Sturgis, South Dakota, when Frederick J. Bandholtz made this 1909 panoramic photograph of the 4th U.S. Cavalry. The post had been founded in the late 1870s to watch over the region after the gold rush brought miners into the hills, and by the 1900s it was a cavalry station rather than a frontier fort under threat. The Black Hills economy still rested on gold, most famously at the Homestake mine in Lead, along with timber, cattle ranching, and the railroads that carried ore and supplies. Soldiers from the post were a familiar presence in nearby towns, and local residents would have known the fort as a source of payroll, dances, and parades. The photograph records the troops and their grounds at a time when the army's role in the region was shifting toward routine garrison duty.
