Deadwood, in the narrow gulch of Whitewood Creek in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, was still living off the gold rush of the 1870s in 1909. Its fortunes depended on the mining camps and mills up the hills, above all the Homestake operation in nearby Lead, which kept the valley's stores, saloons, and rail traffic busy. Deadwood had burned badly in 1879 and again in 1894, and brick and stone buildings had gone up on the steep slopes after each fire. Its reputation as the town where Wild Bill Hickok was shot in 1876 drew visitors who wanted to see the old frontier streets. Residents in 1909 would have known the place as a mining supply town of a few thousand people, still working to outlast the boom years.
