Deadwood, South Dakota, in 1902 was a gold mining town squeezed into a narrow gulch of the northern Black Hills, about a quarter century after prospectors rushed in during 1876. Gold from nearby claims, and the large Homestake operations at Lead, kept many residents at work, and a rail line reaching Deadwood in 1890 brought in equipment and supplies. The town had rebuilt in brick and stone after a devastating fire in 1879, but its frontier reputation lingered, since Wild Bill Hickok had been shot in a saloon there in 1876. Residents knew it as the Lawrence County seat and a gateway to the hills, where mining, saloons and gambling halls shared the same crowded streets.
