Spearfish, in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, was a small valley town in 1902, shaped by the gold camps and timber trade of the hills around it. Its economy rested on farming and stock raising in the valley, sawmilling from the surrounding pine forest, and the steady traffic of miners and suppliers bound for Deadwood and Lead. The town also had a state normal school, which trained teachers for the region's rural schools and gave Spearfish a civic life centered on education and churches. Residents in 1902 would have known the place as a gateway to the canyon of Spearfish Creek, a scenic draw that already drew summer visitors. Like other Black Hills communities, it was still young, with most of its buildings and families less than a few decades old.
