Lead, South Dakota, in 1907 was a gold-mining town in the northern Black Hills, built up the steep slopes around the Homestake Mine, which had grown into one of the largest gold producers in the country. Work at the mine set the rhythm of daily life, with shifts changing above ground, ore hauled to stamp mills, and miners' families depending on wages from the company. The town had already suffered a serious fire in 1902 that destroyed much of its business district, and residents spent the following years rebuilding streets, churches, and shops. Panoramic views like this one showed the crowded hillside of frame houses and mining structures, and locals would have recognized it as the place that drew workers to the Black Hills after the gold rush of the 1870s.
