Canton, South Dakota, in 1907 was a small farm town in Lincoln County, in the southeastern corner of the state near the Big Sioux River and not far from Sioux Falls. South Dakota had been a state for less than two decades, and its economy still rested on grain, livestock, and dairying, with most families depending on the surrounding farms. Rail connections brought in lumber, coal, and machinery and carried grain and hogs to market, so the town's stores, grain elevators, and churches served the countryside as much as the people living in town. Residents of that era would have known Canton as a quiet county seat-sized community of farmers, tradesmen, and church congregations, shaped by the rhythms of planting and harvest.
