Lead, in the Black Hills of western South Dakota, was a gold mining town in 1901, and its economy rested almost entirely on the Homestake mine, which had been opened in 1876 after prospectors followed the gold rush into the hills. The mine was among the largest gold producers in the country, and it drew a large population of miners, mill workers, and their families to a town squeezed onto steep slopes above Whitewood Creek. Mining work was hard and dangerous, and the company's shafts and mill shaped nearly every part of daily life, from where houses could be built to when shifts changed. Nearby Deadwood, with its own gold history, was the better-known name in the region, but Lead's mine was the one that kept working through the decades that followed.
