Sioux Falls, the largest city in South Dakota in 1908, was built around the cataracts of the Big Sioux River, where water power had drawn mills and factories since the 1860s. The city's economy rested on flour milling, meatpacking and other processing, and on the granite and quartzite quarries nearby, whose stone went into buildings across the region. Railroad lines brought grain, livestock and settlers into town, and the business district along the main street served farm families from across the surrounding counties who came in on Saturdays to trade and conduct business. Residents in 1908 knew their city as the Minnehaha County seat and as a growing center of commerce on the prairie, still a few decades removed from its frontier beginnings.
