Flandreau, in Moody County in eastern South Dakota, was a small railroad town of farms and grain elevators in 1914, and the Flandreau Indian School was its largest institution. The federal boarding school enrolled Native students from many tribes and nations, who were taught farming, carpentry, printing, dairy work, and domestic skills under a policy that aimed to replace their languages and customs with American ones. Students spent part of each day on school farm work and trades, which kept the campus partly self-supporting. Local residents knew the school as a major employer and a fixture of the town, while its students often lived far from home for years at a time. The picture shows the school grounds as the institution presented itself to the outside world in the early twentieth century.
