Mountain Iron, Minnesota, in 1902 sat on the Mesabi Range in the northeastern part of the state, where the iron ore pit had become one of the district's major workings. The ore was dug with steam shovels and hauled by rail to Lake Superior, then shipped through Duluth to steel mills farther east, so the mine's output was tied to the industrial demand of American steelmaking. In 1901 the Oliver Iron Mining Company, which operated many Mesabi properties, became part of the newly formed United States Steel Corporation, a change that shaped the range's ownership and labor for decades. Miners and their families in the company town were largely immigrants from Finland, Italy, Slovenia, and other parts of Europe, and their daily lives revolved around shift whistles, company stores, and the weather on the open pit.
