Proctor Knot, a rail junction just west of Duluth in St. Louis County, Minnesota, was busy in 1902 because of the iron ore boom on the nearby Mesabi Range. Ore trains from the mines converged here and ran on to the lake docks at Duluth, so the yards and shops were central to the region's economy. Railroad work drew machinists, brakemen, and laborers, and the settlement grew up around the tracks and the company buildings that served them. Most residents would have known the place first as a railroad town, where the sound of switching engines and the schedule of ore and freight trains set daily life. Lumber from the surrounding forests and the wider growth of northern Minnesota added to the traffic moving through the area.
