St. Anthony Park, on the northwest edge of St. Paul, was in 1902 a neighborhood taking shape around the state's agricultural college, which had grown up on its University Farm campus beside the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Residents lived within easy reach of the railroad lines that fed St. Paul's wholesale trade and its stockyards and warehouses, and many of them worked in the city's commercial district or on the university grounds. The Twin Cities were then growing quickly, with Minneapolis known for flour milling and St. Paul for its rail freight and commerce, and new houses and streets were spreading across the prairie edge of both cities. This view shows the neighborhood as a quiet, partly settled district, a place people knew mainly for its farm school, its fairgrounds, and its nearness to the rail yards.
