In 1902, Asbury Park, New Jersey, was a summer resort that drew most of its income from visitors who came down by rail from Newark, New York, and Philadelphia during the warm months. The Central Railroad of New Jersey's shore line carried holidaymakers to the beachfront, where hotels, boarding houses, and cottages filled the blocks between the rail depot and the Atlantic. The town's Methodist heritage still shaped its Sunday habits, and neighboring Ocean Grove kept its own strict observances, so residents had to balance a religious reputation against the lively trade of the season. Local people of that year would have judged the summer by the crowds on the boardwalk and the number of rooms let in August.
