Asbury Park, New Jersey, in 1902 was a seaside resort that had grown out of the Methodist and temperance movements of the 1870s, when James A. Bradley laid out the town on the Atlantic shore south of Ocean Grove. Visitors arrived by rail from New York and Philadelphia, and hotels, boardinghouses, and shops along the beachfront depended on summer crowds for their income. The town's founders had banned the sale of liquor, so families who came for the sea air, church services, and promenades found a quieter kind of holiday than the rowdier resorts farther north. Fourth Avenue ran toward the ocean as the main route to the sand, and people there would have known the town mainly as a respectable place to spend a summer week.
