In 1902, Asbury Park was a little over thirty years old and still measured its progress by the seasons it had survived. Its hotel and cottage owners worked a short summer trade, and the first warm weeks of June set the pace for everyone from landladies to the men who ran the bathhouses along the sand. Life there ran on two tracks: the Methodist Sunday calm inherited from the founders, and the more worldly amusements that brought in the money. Summer residents of that decade would have talked less about the town's origins than about whether the ocean-front pavilions and sand paths were drawing enough visitors to carry them through the winter.
