In 1909, the Hudson shore opposite Manhattan was becoming a commuter fringe, and the bluffs and river towns of Bergen County, including the Highwood Park area, relied on ferries, trolleys, and rail lines to carry residents across to New York for work. The Manhattan skyline was growing taller, with the new Metropolitan Life Tower finished that year, and the region's shipping, warehousing, and factory jobs drew workers from both shores. That September, the Hudson-Fulton Celebration filled the river with naval vessels and reenacted steamboats, marking 300 years since Henry Hudson's voyage and 100 years since Robert Fulton's first commercial steamboat run. For people living across the river, the water was both a daily route to work and a stage for the region's pride in its maritime past.
