Trenton, the capital of New Jersey, sat on the Delaware River in 1909 as one of the state's busiest manufacturing centers. Its factories made wire rope, pottery, and steel, and John A. Roebling's Sons was among the best-known names in the city's industrial life. Rail lines and the Delaware and Raritan Canal carried goods to New York and Philadelphia, drawing immigrant workers from Italy, Hungary, and other countries to its mills and kilns. Residents of the period knew Trenton as a working city of about 100,000 people, proud of its output and of the state offices that gave it a civic life centered on the Statehouse.
