The English warships anchored on the Hudson River off the Jersey shore in 1909 were part of the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, a September and October festival marking the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage up the river and the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton's steamboat *Clermont*. Foreign navies sent vessels to New York for the occasion, and the river between Manhattan and the New Jersey palisades filled with ships, excursion boats, and crowds on both banks. The New Jersey side was a working waterfront, with rail terminals, passenger piers, and ferry slips at Hoboken and Weehawken serving the commuter and immigrant traffic that moved through the port. For people living across from the harbor, the fleet was a rare display of foreign naval power in their own water, and it drew them to the shore to watch the ships and the night illuminations.
