North Hudson County in 1909 was a dense, industrial stretch of New Jersey across the Hudson from Manhattan, with Union Hill, West Hoboken, Guttenberg, and Weehawken packed into a few square miles. The area's economy rested on factories, breweries, silk and textile works, and the rail and ferry traffic that moved goods and commuters to and from New York. Its population was heavily German, Irish, and recent immigrant, and the towns were known for their churches, saloons, and tight neighborhood life. Hudson County government and the local Democratic machine shaped much of civic life, and the Palisades rising behind the towns gave the views a dramatic backdrop.
