New Brunswick in 1913 was a Raritan River city of brick streets, church spires, and busy neighborhoods that stretched down toward the water. The New Brunswick Theological Seminary, founded in 1784 and still training Reformed Church ministers, stood among the older institutions that gave the town its reputation for learning and religious life. St. Peter's Hospital, run by the Sisters of Charity, served a growing population of mill and factory workers, many of them immigrants from Hungary, Italy, and Poland who had settled on the city's south and west sides. Across the country that year, the talk in local papers was as likely to be about tariffs, new municipal paving, and the approach of a wider war in Europe as about the city's own affairs.
