Rutgers College sat on its hill above the Raritan River in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1913, still a men's college with a modest campus of brick and stone buildings. Founded in 1766 as Queen's College, it had taken the name of its benefactor, Henry Rutgers, in 1825 and was New Jersey's land-grant institution, though it remained privately governed. New Brunswick was a manufacturing town shaped by the Raritan River, the Delaware and Raritan Canal, and the Pennsylvania Railroad, and Johnson & Johnson, founded there in 1886, was already a growing employer. Townspeople and students knew the college for its scarlet colors and its football rivalry with Princeton, dating to the 1869 game often called the first intercollegiate football contest.
