Paterson, New Jersey, in 1913 was the center of American silk manufacturing, a city of dye houses and weaving mills that drew their power from the Great Falls of the Passaic River. Its workforce was largely immigrant, with many Italian, Irish, Jewish, and Eastern European families living in the crowded streets close to the mills. That February, silk workers walked out over pay, hours, and the loom system, and the strike drew national attention, including organizers from the Industrial Workers of the World. Mill owners held firm through the spring and summer, and the strike collapsed by late July without winning most of its demands. Residents of the city knew Paterson first as Silk City, and the year's labor fight marked the place in the national press.
