In 1913, Mount Arlington, a small borough in Morris County, New Jersey, lived largely off the summer trade that flowed from nearby Lake Hopatcong. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad had carried city visitors into the hills since the late 1800s, and the town's mineral springs and boarding houses drew families who stayed for weeks at a time. Hotels like the New Breslin were built to hold that crowd, with dining rooms, verandas and room for guests arriving by train from Newark and New York. Local life in the borough revolved around the seasons, with hotel staff, livery drivers and shopkeepers gearing up each spring for the next influx of summer guests. The hotel's large facade, shown here in a wide photograph, reflects how much the community depended on that resort economy.
