Mount Arlington, in Morris County, New Jersey, was a summer resort town in 1904, drawing visitors to the shores of Lake Hopatcong, the largest lake in the state. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad carried vacationers from New York and Newark to the lake, and hotels, boarding houses and summer cottages grew up along its shore to meet the demand. The New Breslin Hotel was one of the large establishments built to house these guests, offering rooms, dining and lakeside leisure for families escaping the heat of the cities. Life in the town followed the summer season, with its economy tied to boating, bathing, and the tourists who arrived by train each June and left by early autumn.
