Mount Arlington, a small community on the shore of Lake Hopatcong in Morris County, New Jersey, depended in 1913 on the visitors who came up for the summer season. The New Breslin Hotel, shown in this 1913 photograph, was one of the larger lodgings catering to guests from Newark and New York, who reached the lake by rail. Hotel staff, boatmen, and shopkeepers relied on the warm months from late spring into early autumn, so the season shaped local employment more than any mill or factory did. Residents would have known the town first as a lakeside resort, quieter in winter and busy with guests, cottage owners, and hotel life in summer.
