New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1913 was a Middlesex County seat sitting on the Raritan River, where the Delaware and Raritan Canal and the rail lines of the region carried freight between New York and Philadelphia. Factories along the river and in the city's older streets made a range of goods, and by then Johnson & Johnson, founded there in 1886, had grown into one of the best-known local employers. Rutgers College, chartered in the colonial era and by then a fixture of the city, drew students and faculty into town life, while the city's churches, trolley lines and downtown shops served a population of working families and merchants. Residents of that decade would have known New Brunswick as a river town that balanced its college and its industry.
