Newark in 1912 was one of the larger industrial cities in the East, and the panorama shows a dense townscape of church towers, office blocks, and smokestacks before the automobile began to reshape its streets. Downtown public life centered on Military Park, which bordered the Washington Park library building, a marble structure by Cass Gilbert that opened in 1901 and drew readers from every ward. Thread making, carried on by firms such as the Clark Thread Company, supplied textile mills across the country, while horse-drawn drays still moved freight over the cobbled streets near the rail yards. Many of the families who worked in those factories were German, Italian, and Irish, and their parishes stand among the crowded blocks in the picture.
