Sea Girt, a shore community in Monmouth County, New Jersey, was known in 1912 as the summer home of the state militia's training camp, and that August it became the setting for Democratic politics. Governor Woodrow Wilson, who had won the New Jersey statehouse in 1910 as a reform candidate, had been nominated for president at the Baltimore convention that July, and the formal notification of his nomination was held at Sea Girt in early August. The seaside resort drew crowds of party officials, local organizers, and visitors from across the state, and the gathering took place during a three-way contest with Theodore Roosevelt's Progressive ticket and the incumbent Republican William Howard Taft. Wilson went on to win the November election, and the Sea Girt gathering remained a notable moment in New Jersey's political life.
